Don’t you just love that feeling you get when you try something new? New activities are a great way to find out about skills you never knew you had, to meet new people and bond with your kids.
Doing these activities together as a family will also help your kids to develop confidence – so if you’re looking for a new and exciting challenge, we’ve come up with some great ideas.
Get the bikes out and go for a ride. Find some country lanes to ride down and explore or go off-road. Cycling gives you a great sense of freedom and whizzing down hills gives you a fab adrenaline buzz too.
What equipment do I need? Bikes and helmets
How much will it cost? If you’ve already got bikes and helmets, then cycling is totally free, otherwise it’ll cost you a few hundred pounds to get them for the whole family, but it’s a good investment if you use them a lot. Alternatively, many places will hire them out.
You don’t have to go abroad to ski these days, you can visit an indoor ski centre or a dry slope for some lessons and some practice. If you’ve ever fancied a skiing holiday, this is a great way to find out if you’d enjoy it – and on indoor ski slopes you’re skiing on real snow.
What equipment do I need? You’ll be able to hire skis, helmets and probably a waterproof jacket, just dress very warmly – gloves and thick socks are a must.
How much will it cost? An hour’s lesson for a family of 4 will cost around £100.
Climbing is much more doable for families than it used to be – there are loads of climbing walls you can visit so you can have a safe and fun day out, and it’s a great form of exercise too.
What equipment do I need? Just wear comfortable clothing and tie long hair back – everything else you’ll be able to hire there.
How much will it cost? You can get taster sessions for 4 people for around £50.
There’s bound to be an ice rink somewhere near you – and ice skating’s not just a winter sport! Once you’ve mastered the basics (staying upright, stopping without crashing into the wall), challenge youself to learn some tricks like skating backwards, spinning or balancing on one leg.
What equipment do I need? You’ll be able to hire skates from the rink, so just dress warmly – don’t forget your gloves.
How much will it cost? A session’s ice skating usually costs around £4-£8 per person.
Who says Rollerblading is just for kids? Get a pair for yourself as well and head to the park.
What equipment do I need? Just a pair of rollerblades and some elbow pads, knee pads and wrist guards if you want to be on the safe side.
How much will it cost? You can buy a pair of rollerblades for anything from £15-£300. And a set of wrist, knee and elbow protectors will cost around £10.
Walk, jog or run round a course while putting your map reading skills to the test. Orienteering is great for adventurous families and it doesn’t matter how young or old you are, or how fit you are.
What equipment do I need? A good pair of walking boots or comfy trainers will help.
How much will it cost? It’s usually around £5 for a family to enter an orienteering event.
When it comes to experiencing the great outdoors, there’s nothing like pitching up your tent and cooking on an open fire. Combine your camping trip with other outdoor activities like hiking or canoeing and it’s a great way to have a really cheap break too, once you’ve got the equipment you need. Campsites are much nicer than you expect nowadays too, you’ll find ones with hot showers, little shops, kids’ playgrounds and electricity hook-ups on site.

What equipment do I need? If you’re starting from scratch, you’ll need to buy quite a lot – a tent, sleeping mats, sleeping bags PLUS all your cooking equipment and things like cool bags. But think if you have any friends or family who are big fans of camping, could you borrow some things from them? Look out for end-of-summer sales in camp shops to pick up a bargain.
How much will it cost? Once you’ve got the equipment sorted, campsites will charge you as little as £10 a night.
