Dad holds funeral for worm he found on Tesco cucumber, with hilarious results

Poor William the worm...

A dad's hilarious Facebook post has gone viral, after he shared the story of a dead worm that he found on a Tesco cucumber, and the exchange with the supermarket that followed.

Father-of-three Wes bought the cucumber to make his 'favourite dish' - cucumber sandwiches - from Tesco on Thursday, but was disappointed to discover there was a dead worm trapped in the cellophane wrapping. But, it turns out he wasn't disappointed for the reason you might think.

Wes turned to Tesco's Facebook page to complain, but instead of the usual message of annoyance you might expect, the dad messaged the supermarket to tell them of his family's grief at the worm's death.

Wes explained that he was initially excited to show his children their new pet, but that the worm, who he named William, was 'unresponsive, we just put it down to him being sleepy'.

However, the dad later suspected that things had taken a turn for the worst when '24 hours later and William still hasn't moved and I think he might be dead, I'm no vet but I think the tight shrink wrap on the cucumber may have squashed and killed William'.

He signed off his post with a tongue and cheek challenge to Tesco, asking them to 'wriggle your way out of this one?!'

It didn't take long for poetic Rob in Tesco's customer care team to come back with a heartfelt message, and within an hour the family had an 'ode to William' to lift their spirits slightly.

'He wriggled many miles, he gave us many smiles', Rob wrote in his touching tribute to William, ending with the hashtag #PoemsforWilliam.

Before long, Wes's family had given an update, after holding a funeral for William the worm, they posted their own poem and letting Rob know that 'it's been an emotional day but the funeral went without a hitch'.

In their own tribute, they wrote: 'William's death has brought us all here, sharing jokes and spreading cheer'.

Ever the wordsmith, Tesco employee Rob came back with a fantastic rewrite of the Oasis classic Wonder Wall, 'Today is gonna be the day that we're gonna celebrate for Will'.

The hilarious exchanges went on over two days on the Tesco Facebook page, with thousands of people liking and commenting to get involved. Wes's original post has now been liked over 89,000 times - a result we think William would've been proud of!
