Giovanna Fletcher reveals how having kids helped Tom’s battle with depression

Mum blogger and author Giovanna Fletcher has opened up about how having children helped ease the symptoms of husband Tom’s depression.

Fans of McFly have been enamoured by the childhood sweethearts and their adorable relationship for years, and when Giovanna announced her first pregnancy in a YouTube video in 2013, they quickly became one of the nation’s favourite families.

But during the time they’ve been together, Tom has been through a quiet battle with depression, and now Giovanna has spoken out about how becoming a dad has helped him with the experience.

‘I think you realise that time is precious and you try not to waste it so you don’t sweat the small stuff,’ she told The Mirror during an exclusive interview to promote Compare the Market’s Letters of Life campaign. ‘They made [us] a bit more focused.’

‘Tom now is very different to Tom five years ago,’ she continued. ‘It is about having someone else to think about and care for and putting them first.’

Making the move from rock-star to super-dad seems to have come naturally to Tom, who’s now thoroughly enjoying fatherhood just like his best friend and band mate Harry Judd, who welcomed his second child earlier this year.

But things weren’t always such smooth sailing for Tom, who in the past has spoken out about his battle with his mental health, and even attended a stint at London’s The Priory rehab facility in 2011.

‘I was taking medication, but I don’t any more. Having a kid has really helped me in my life,’ he said in 2015, whilst Giovanna was expecting their second child. ‘It gives you a sense of needing to be stable. It’s not about you any more, it’s about this child that you’ve decided to bring into the world.’

And now Giovanna has echoed the same sentiment, telling The Mirror: ‘There a lot of people who have depression and [having kids] doesn’t help them. He’s very lucky like that – he’s in a very good place.’

‘It’s amazing seeing him with the boys – he’s very playful. He teaches me how to do stuff. I think I always knew that I would be the strict one and Tom would be the playful one.’

Even more happily, the mum-of-two has also expressed hopes that another baby could be on the cards for the growing family.

‘We will do at some point – the next few years are choc-a-block full of stuff! Some of these things you can’t plan but who knows what’s going to happen.’
