Questions about Chat

How do I start chatting?

You need to register before you can start using goodtoknow Chat. You can register here. Enter your first and last name, plus your email address. You'll then need a password. This should be 8 letters or more and something you'll remember.

You then need to input a code shown on the page and press the register on goodtoknow button. Once that's done, you'll receive an email from us - this is just to make sure that your email address is correct.

I get this error message when I enter my email address: This email address has already been registered. Please use another one. Why?

If you have already registered to chat on another website in the IPC Media family such as Now or What's On TV, you will already have an account which you can use to chat on goodtoknow.

You don't need to register again. Instead, you can start chatting straight away by going to the log in page and entering your email address and password. If you have forgotten your password, click here to get a new one.

I have registered but not received my verification email from you yet - why is this?

This could be for several reasons:
- Make sure that the email address you registered with is the correct one and doesn't have a spelling mistake in it.
- The email was sent to your mailbox, but was sent back to us because your mailbox was full.
- Have you checked your junk mail folder? The email may be in there.

I can't remember my password, what can I do?

Don't worry - just visit this page. You'll need to enter the email address you registered with. You'll then receive an email entitled Your password request on goodtoknow. Click on the link in the email. This takes you to a page where you can create a whole new password. Just remember to make it memorable so you don't forget it!

Is this information secure?

We take security very seriously. All our registration systems are held on secure servers. For more information about our privacy policies, please see our Privacy Policy.

What is my display name?

This is what you will be known as on goodtoknow Chat. It's just like a nickname and allows you to chat without having to use your real name. To keep yourself safe online, choose a display name, which doesn't reveal your real name or use any other details that could identify you or your children.

What is an avatar?

Basically, this is a photo or image, which allows you to personalise your profile. It's not recommended to use a photo of yourself. Instead use something that represents you e.g. if you're mad about cats choose an image of a cat.

What is a signature?

This is basically a motto or phrase that you love (a line from your favourite movie perhaps) or sums you up.

Why do I have to fill in details about myself such as my hobbies?

You don't have to if you don't want to. However, if you do want to fill in the information, go ahead. It's just a way of making your profile more personal.

Can I update my profile after I've registered?

Yes. When you sign in to Chat, you will see three options at the top of the page (just underneath June). These include a link to update your profile. If you click on it, you can change anything, including your photo and personal information.

What is Welcome Chat?

This is the place to talk about anything not included in the other sections (Health, Family, Food and Diets). So if you fancy chatting about the latest episode of Coronation Street or asking a question about clothes or beauty, this is the place to do it.

How do I start a new topic?

Decide which section most suits what you want to talk about e.g. if you want to discuss tips to fight colds, the Health section would be most appropriate. There are various topics within that section so again choose the topic, which is most suited to your comment.

Click on the topic and you'll see other comments from users and at the bottom a button that says New topic. If you click on this, it will take you to a page, where you can start your new topic.

In the title box, enter a description of you comment e.g. What's the best way to fight off colds? Then in the Content box, add your comment. This is what other people will read and reply to. Once you've filled it in, just hit the Add comment button.

You can also choose to include your signature on your comment (if you have one) by clicking on the box that says Add my signature to this post.

How do I reply to someone's comment?

If you've seen a comment that you want to reply to, just click on the Reply link at the bottom of the comment. This takes you to a page where you can add your reply. Once you've filled it in, just hit the Add comment button. You can also choose to include your signature on your comment (if you have one) by clicking on the box that says Add my signature to this post.

Is goodtoknow Chat monitored?

goodtoknow is not responsible for and does not monitor or edit messages posted by users. We do however take down any offensive comments that have been reported to us by our users.

How do I report an offensive comment?

If you come across a comment that offends you, you can report it to us. Simple click on the report link in the actual comment you want to report. This will take you to a page where you report the comment. Choose one of the options from the drop down menu and then press the Send to us button.

I'm stuck! How do I get help?

The first place to come to is here! If you don't find the answer to your question here, then the next stop is Chat Help. Here you can ask a question about anything chat related and either other users will know the answer or one of our goodtoknow staff will reply.

If that still hasn't answered your question, why not email us. You can contact us here.

I'm worried about how safe it is to chat on the internet - can you give me some tips?

Chatting on the internet is a good way of finding information and support. It's also a great way to make new friends, however, it does pay to be cautious.

- Although you may feel comfortable with the group of friends you have made you should always remember that anyone can read what you post online. If you post lots of details about your life, work or town then people may be able to piece together a picture of who, and where, you are.
- Never reveal your home address, email address, or your telephone numbers in Chat as they might be seen by people who you'd rather not see them.
- If you decide to meet up with friends from the internet, take sensible precautions. Meet in a public place, take a friend with you and make sure someone knows where you are going and when you will be back.
- When commenting in Chat, treat other members with respect. You may not always agree with the opinions or the advice you are given but think carefully about what you say in your reply. Remember offensive posts will be reported to goodtoknow.
