The truth about chicken and eggs

Chicken and eggs: Battery farming and organic, the price differences and recipes

Do you love a few fried eggs at the weekend or roast chicken for Sunday lunch? If you do, have you ever thought about where the chicken and eggs have come from? TV chef Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall has put the spotlight on how poultry are farmed to encourage us to boycott cheap chicken and eggs. Here's our guide to the terms used in poultry farming for chicken and eggs, how to work out exactly what you're buying, plus chicken-friendly recipes for you to try at home.

What does organic mean?
Grown without artificial fertilisers, sprays and additives. Organic chickens are fed organic feed and organic eggs are produced by chickens who are fed organic feed.

What does genetically modified mean?
