Save money No. 10 - clever portions
Getting the portions right is the best way to avoid food hitting the bin. Over-filling a plate is a sure way to end up with leftovers. You can use basic kitchen utensils to help measure the right amounts.
For example, a 300ml mug is ideal for measuring uncooked rice (one adult portion equals a quarter of a mug), weighing scales give you an accurate measure, and try a tablespoon for dried fruit and nuts. Invest in a spaghetti measurer and you'll have an easy way of measuring pasta.
The lovefoodhatewaste portion planner removes the guesswork by suggesting how much to cook, depending on who's coming for dinner.
Once you've got your measurements spot on, give some of these recipes a go:
Speedy Bolognese
Chilli prawn and broccoli spaghetti
Mushroom risotto
Chicken kebabs on jewelled rice
