Time your turkey to perfection, serve up oven-hot veg and steam your Christmas pud on time for an Oscar-winning Christmas Day performance.

Timings are set for a 3pm meal - adjust to suit you and your family.

    9am:
  • Make Christmas pudding if you haven't made it in advance (it needs to be re-steamed 1-2 hours before serving too)

  • Take the turkey out of the fridge to get it to room temperature

  • 10.30am:
  • Pre-heat the oven to the recommended cooking temperature - see our easy turkey cooking guide

  • 11am:
  • It's time to start cooking the turkey - read these tips on how to cook turkey

  • 11.30am:
  • Take the prepared vegetables/herbs out of the fridge and bring to room temperature

  • Noon:
  • Set the table (or ask one of your happy helpers to!)

  • 12.30pm:
  • Cool the Christmas pud, wrap in foil and store somewhere cool and dry

  • 2pm:
  • Add the potatoes to the oven. 10 minutes later, add the parsnips/root veg. Wash and cut the cabbage

  • 2.30pm:
  • Take the turkey out of the oven, cover it in foil and leave it to rest in a warm place.

  • With half an hour to go, it's time to add the vegetables, stuffing/stuffing balls and chipolatas to the oven - increase temperature to 200°C (400°F/gas mark 6).

  • Cook the cabbage - browse our cabbage recipes including ones for red cabbage

  • Heat the soup and serve in cups with a dollop of crème fraiche as you work on last-minute touches

  • 2.45pm:
  • Ask someone to carve up the turkey while you heat the bread sauce, make the gravy and transfer sauces, veg etc to serving platters

  • 3pm:
  • Seat your guests and tuck in!

Note: Don't forget you need to steam the Christmas pudding about two hours before serving so around 4pm for a 6pm dessert.
