We’ve all felt it. The cost of feeding the family has sky-rocketed over recent years and getting tasty, healthy meals on the table without blowing the budget is becoming a tricky feat for mum.
New research from DEFRA (The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs), shows that unsurprisingly food prices have risen by 12% in the last year, but as food gets more expensive and incomes are reduced, rather than missing out, the UK’s busy mums are finding clever ways to still enjoy great-tasting food at home.
TV chefs have been telling us for ages to get to know our local butcher and it seems that lots of you are now taking heed, with cheaper cuts of meat being 14% more popular than they were in 2007. We love it that the UK’s mums aren’t taking meat off the menu, just thinking of clever ways to serve it up while keeping costs at a minimum.
Also, more of you than ever are choosing to cook from scratch. Stats show a clear rise in the purchase of base ingredients like flour (up 33%), margarine (up 13%) and eggs (up 12%) over the last five years. The Great British Bake Off-effect perhaps? Or has the cost of going out driven a new-found love of cooking in many cash-strapped Brits?
But all this aside, one thing that stood out to us was how wasteful we all still are! 32% of all bread bought ends up in the bin along with 24% of vegetables and potatoes and 20% off all fruit. That averages at £408 a year, per family. Just think what you could do with that extra cash!
