The reaction was one of shock when Coleen Rooney forgave husband Wayne, 25, for sleeping with two prostitutes while she was pregnant with their son Kai, now 16 months.
And while she couldn't imagine life without the man she's loved since she was 16, it appears fans aren't so sure.
For it seems her decision to stand by him has come at a huge cost - to her career, her reputation and her bank balance.
Just last week it was revealed that ITV had decided they wouldn't do a third series of her makeover show Coleen's Real Women following poor ratings - and friends say Coleen, 24, is laying the blame at her cheating husband's door.
‘Coleen and Wayne have been constantly bickering,' says a pal. ‘She knows she lost respect from the public but she never imagined things would turn out this badly.
'The couple were keen to start trying for another baby but that's the last thing on her mind now because she doesn't want to be anywhere near him.
'She remembers how good their life was before Wayne's exploits came to light in September 2010 and it's his fault that they're both facing a drop in their public appeal.'
Already Coleen's ‘girl next door' image has waned and TV insiders tell us that Real Women was getting flak because ‘Coleen was far from being a real woman'.
Her spokesperson denies the show was axed, saying: ‘The last series was made more than two years ago and there were never plans for a new one. Coleen's role as ambassador for Littlewoods and the launch of her Butterflies perfume hardly support the idea of a crumbling career.'
