Alcoholism and problem drinking
goodtoknow says: Alcoholism means you are addicted to alcohol and cannot function without it. If you crave alcohol as soon as you wake, if you tremble, shake and feel sick without it, then you could be an alcoholic. Alcoholism is a very serious disease which affects around 2 in 100 women in the UK and can kill. The best treatment is to stop drinking altogether, have therapy and occasionally medication too.
For a full medical explanation of the causes, symptoms and treatments of alcoholism from patient.co.uk, read on.
Alcoholism is a word which many people use to mean 'alcohol dependence' (alcohol addiction). Some people are 'problem drinkers' without being dependent on alcohol. If you are alcohol dependent then detoxification ('detox') can help you to stop drinking.
Problems with drinking alcohol
There are roughly four 'levels' of alcohol drinking - social, heavy, problem and dependent. As a rule, each level increases the risk to your health and safety.
Social drinking
Most people drink some alcohol. However, even a small amount of alcohol can be dangerous if you drive, operate machinery, or take some types of medication.
