goodtoknow says: Everyone gets anxious when they're under stress. Classic symptoms of anxiety include palpitations, sweating and a dry mouth. They're unpleasant but nothing to worry about. However, if you experience anxiety attacks regularly in your day to day life for no apparent reason, it's probably time you asked for help. Anxiety disorders are better understood now than ever before with around 1 in 20 people experiencing them, so there's no need to feel embarrassed. Treatments range from talking therapies such as Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) to anti-depressants and beta blockers. See your GP.

Stress and anxiety expert Charles Linden says: 'Stress is the result of pushing your anxiety levels to the extreme. Learn to pull back early on, recognise your limits and modify your behaviour.'

i think i might be suffering from anxiety or depression. ive been like it for about 2 years. i moved away with my boyfreind to a town that he knows and i didn't. whenever his freind come over i feel sweaty, hot and cold and i get the shakes, i also find it hard to talk to them so go quiet and i think they think im being rude. i don't know why this started because i used to be confident and happy. my boyfreind asked me why i don't talk to anyone when they come over i told him i didn't know and i just feel sad most of the time. can anyone give me any advice?

have suffered with anxiety for about 3 years now, some periods are worse than others, only recently it had got alot better but only because ive been avoiding anything that has been causing me to feel that way, certain places ive had attacks before for example, and also avoiding dating anyone as it seems to bring it on. However, recently it has been creeping up on me in my sleep so after about 2am thats all the sleep im gonna get! does anyone know of anything that can help me with this, i would be very grateful..

Its not surprising doctors don't understand, anxiety is emotionally painful and traumatic, the parasympathetic nervous system is no longer keeping the sympathetic in check, hence the release of excess adrenaline into the body, the patient is trapped in a vicious cycle of fear-adrenaline-fear. After several years depersonalisation and further avoidance creeps in. I suffered for almost 10 years and helped to cure myself, in my experience doctors are next to useless at treating these conditions, all that medication can do is mask some of the symptoms at best. CBT is good or in my case self help which im glad I did. be well Nasir

hello my names is ian and i suffer anxiety. Ive been suffering it for about a year or so now but tryed coping with it my own way. At first i thought i had something seriously wrong with me so i went and spoke to my gp. My gp was not any good to me at all considering this was my first trip to the doctors in over 5 years, she basically just said that i had a panic attack and had nothing to worry about and offered to prescibe me "anti-depressants". I refused them because i felt that i was not depressed and that i just needed help and advice because i had no idea what was going onwith my body. So i just got back to my day to day routines fearing i might have another one at any point. Well just my luck, Because I was worrying and fearing that i would experience another attack I manged to cause an attack again. As a year went past i found different methods of coping with it like for example "Think positvley, try stay as calm as possible when an attack is brewing ( eventhough it was a great difficulty ). Due to these attacks I have felt physically tired all the time, mentally exhausted and have lacked motivation and cofindence. I have been finding life very difficult living this way not including the normal stresses and strains life brings. It's made me loose jobs, made it harder to find a job. Basically could someone give me some advice on what i should do now beacuse my G.P is no help what so ever to me. I have just got a new job and i am feeling very nervous about it because i really want to stick at it. My start date it 5th January 2008. I would just like some professional help to overcome this period that i have been going through. I would really like someone to get back to me so that i can get my life together and start being a normal healthy person again! Thankyou Ian

It wasn’t really the anxiety that I feel I am going through, I think that the anxiety I have is classed as ‘abnormal’ anxiety and was hoping to find out more information and how to get help on it.
