Anogenital warts (genital warts)

Average rating: 3 out of 5 star rating

goodtoknow says: Don't be embarrassed if you have genital warts. They're the most common sexually transmitted infection, so your doctor will have seen them before. About 50 percent of sexually active men and women carry the human papilloma virus (HPV) that causes them, but won't necessarily get them. You can usually only pick up these small flat or bumpy warts through sexual contact. They'll appear on your genitals or around your anus. They itch but aren't painful, and can be treated at a special genitourinary (GUM) clinic by painting on a liquid or by freezing, burning, lasering or cutting them off.

For a full medical explanation of the causes, symptoms and treatments of genital warts from patient.co.uk, read on.

Anogenital warts are caused by a virus that can be passed on when you have sex. Treatment options include chemicals or physical treatments such as freezing to destroy the warts. If you have anogenital warts, you will usually be advised to have tests to check for other sexually transmitted infections.

What are anogenital warts and what causes them?

Anogenital warts (sometimes just called genital warts) are small lumps that develop on the genitals and/or around the anus (back passage). They are caused by a virus called the human papillomavirus (HPV). There are over 90 types of this virus. Most anogenital warts are caused by types 6 or 11. ('Common warts' that many people have on their hands and feet are caused by a different type of HPV.)

It's so reassuring to find out that I'm not the "dirty freak" I am sometimes made to feel like. Indeed, more often than not I do feel like one too.

Yeah it's true not to really freak out if you find out that you have Genital Warts many people have it. just make sure you don't pass it along. You didn't want it and neither do they. I wish someone had thought like that when they gave it to me.

Hi I have had genital warts, and I used a product called Warts No More. It solved the problem after a few weeks, and it didn't cost too much either. bye bye Erin
