Genital herpes
goodtoknow says: Genital herpes is an infection of the genitals that is caused by the herpes simplex virus. You get it by having sex with an infected person, although that person may not even know they have it as 4 in 5 infected people have no symptoms. If they do occur, symptoms usually involve a mild fever, aches and pains, painful blisters around the genitals and anus and pain passing urine. Anti viral medication and painkillers can ease symptoms considerably. Don't have sex while you have blisters. See your GP if you develop herpes during pregnancy.
For a full medical explanation of the causes, symptoms and treatments of genital herpes from patient.co.uk, read on.
Genital herpes is usually a sexually transmitted infection. Many people who are infected with this virus never have symptoms, but can still pass on the infection to others. If symptoms occur, they can range from a mild soreness to painful blisters on the genitals (vulva or penis) and surrounding area. A first episode of symptoms can last 2-3 weeks, but may be shorter. Recurrent episodes of symptoms then develop in some cases from time to time, but are usually less severe than the first episode. Antiviral medication can ease symptoms when they develop. Some people who have frequent recurrences of symptoms take antiviral medication each day to prevent symptoms from developing.

I have what i think is a cold sore on my lip. Some one made a comment about it being herpes and that my boyfriend could get infected. I have had this thing on my lip in the past which i thought was a cold sore because they reappear. It looks like lots of tiny little bumps all in one area. Is this herpes and if so what do i do about it?

Lisa, 9 months
I was diagnosed with Herpes nearly 4 years ago, the first 18 months was hell on earth...I was getting regular attacks and they were the worst weeks of my life. Thankfully I have now learnt the signs that an attack is coming and how to control it....I have had to cut out acohol almost completely as any intake of alcohol seems to bring on the early signs but thankfully no attacks for a couple of years now (touch wood). Like Nicks g/f I have no idea how I got it, I have only had 2 partners and the partner I was with at the time of being diagnosed was tested and given the all clear and the gap from being with my previous partner was too great for him to be the source. The only thing we could think is that I had a tattoo about a month before the first infection in back street tattooist in Blackpool...I dont know if i is possible for this to be the source of the infection - does anyone else know?
