goodtoknow says: There are several types of migraine. Common migraine usually starts on one side of your head as a throbbing pain that gets worse. Bright lights or noise can be unbearable and you may be sick. Classic migraine can have some of the above symptoms besides an 'aura', flashing lights, odd smells and numbness in your face and arms. This can be scary but will pass. Migraine can be controlled with medication and by avoiding common 'triggers' such as cheese, red wine, coffee, stress, and the Pill. Work out your migraine triggers by keeping a diary.

For a full medical explanation of the causes, symptoms and treatments of migraines from patient.co.uk, read on.

Migraine causes attacks of headaches, often with feeling sick or vomiting. Treatment options include: avoiding possible 'triggers', painkillers, anti-inflammatory painkillers, anti-sickness medicines, and triptan medicines. A medicine to prevent migraine attacks is an option if the attacks are frequent or severe.

What is migraine?

Migraine is a condition that causes episodes ('attacks') of headaches. Other symptoms such as feeling sick (nausea) or vomiting are also common. Between migraine attacks, the symptoms go completely. There are two main types of migraine:

  • Migraine without aura - sometimes called common migraine.
  • Migraine with aura - sometimes called classic migraine.

Who gets migraine?

Migraine is common. About 1 in 4 women, and about 1 in 12 men, develop migraine at some point in their life. It most commonly first starts in childhood or as a young adult. Some people have frequent attacks - sometimes several a week. Others have attacks only now and then. Some people may go for years between attacks. In some cases, the migraine attacks stop in later adult life. However, in some cases the attacks persist throughout life.

Tasha, about 1 year

I have suffered migraines as a child very very rarely. Then as an adult after having children i had them maybe once a month or two months. Now im 35 and am having them as many times as one every two to three weeks. The onle way i can get rid of them is to take sumatriptan pills each time,I now only have to phone the doctors for extra pills as im prescribed six at a time and as you can imagine they dont last long.I always get the medication no questions asked. But what i need to know is,should i go back see the doctor as the migraines are getting worse and more frequent? Or should i just except that thats the way things happen with me? They really are ruining my life as im already disabled and have chronic nerve damage and fowlers syndrome,i just dont need these delibitating migraines too! If anyone can help with opinion or advice i would be truly grateful. Many thanks, god bless x

Sandra Taylor, over 2 years

I myself started having migraines when i was 16 & still have them every couple of months, but my daugther who is now 21 started getting migraines just before her 15th birthday & still has them now. When she has an attack its awful, she has been hospitalised 3 or 4 times now & the endless times the doctor has had to come to the house. Her symptoms start in her eye, then down her face & her speech goes totally arratic, she has gone in & out of conciousness, she hyper ventilates due to the pain. Also on occassions she cant walk. She had a head scan the other day & am just waiting for the results, but what we need is if they dont find anything wrong with the head scan, she wants to know how to control them so she can get on with her life. Please if you can help please contact me at the above email address.Thank you
