Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID)

Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID)
Average rating: 3 out of 5 star rating

goodtoknow says: Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) is quite a common bacterial infection that can travel from your vagina to your womb (uterus) and fallopian tubes. It can affect your fertility so the earlier this is diagnosed the better. You may feel pain in your pelvis and womb, pain during sex, or have abnormal bleeding or discharge. Your doctor can prescribe antibiotics to clear it, but with some infections sexual partners must be treated too. Chlaymydia, the sexually transmitted infection (STI) is the most common cause, so using a condom can protect against it.

For a full medical explanation of the causes, symptoms and treatments of pelvic inflammatory disease from patient.co.uk, read on.

Pelvic inflammatory disease is an infection of the uterus and/or fallopian tubes in women. Possible complications include: infertility, persistent pelvic pain, and an increased risk of an ectopic pregnancy if you become pregnant. Treatment is with antibiotics. The earlier treatment is started, the less the risk of complications. Sexual partners should also be treated.
