Ulcerative colitis
goodtoknow says: Ulcerative colitis happens when the colon gets inflamed and ulcers develop. It commonly affects people aged between 15 and 40 and can run in families although the reasons why ulcerative colitis happens aren't known. The main symptoms are bloody diarrhoea, stomach cramps and pain passing stools, fever and weight loss. There is no cure for ulcerative colitis but once diagnosed there are many effective ways to treat it and prevent 'flare ups.' Medication includes steroids and immuno-suppressants which can dramatically reduce the severity of your attacks.

Ulcerative colitis is a disease where inflammation develops in the large intestine (the colon and rectum). The most common symptom when the disease flares-up is bloody diarrhoea. You can usually prevent symptoms from flaring up by taking medication each day. When a flare-up does occur, treatment can usually ease symptoms. Surgery to remove the large intestine is needed in some cases.
