Hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid)
goodtoknow says: If you're gaining weight without eating any more, feeling tired, are constipated, have dry skin and feel cold all the time, you could have an underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism). Around 1 in 50 women develop an underactive thyroid. Your GP can diagnose you via a simple blood test. The basic cause is a lack of the hormone thyroxine which is made in the thyroid gland in your neck. Other symptoms include depression, heavy or irregular periods and a loss of sex drive. Treatment is straightforward and effective and involves taking a thyroxine tablet every day.
