Underactive thyroid/Hypothyroidism

Hypothyroidism | Underactive thyroid |Thyroid weight gain
Average rating: 5 out of 5 star rating

goodtoknow says: Hypothyroidism or an underactive thyroid is characterised by gaining weight without eating any more, feeling tired, being constipated, having dry skin and feeling cold all the time. Around 1 in 50 women develop an underactive thyroid. Your GP can diagnose an underactive thyroid with a simple blood test. The basic cause of hypothyroidism is a lack of the hormone thyroxine which is made in the thyroid gland in your neck. Other symptoms of an underactive thyroid include depression, heavy or irregular periods and a loss of sex drive. Treatment of hypothyroidism is straightforward and effective and involves taking a thyroxine tablet every day.

helen, 29 days

I was diagnosed with Hypothyroidism July 09. One g.p started me on Thyroxine 100mc a day as my TSH level was 59 unbeknown to me at the time i should have been started on a lower dose. After being on this dose for 6 wks mt TSH level was down to 1.4 in my area normal range is 0.2-4.5. The g.p decided to keep me on the 100mc Thyroxine a day to see how i went. 2 wks later i started to feel awful symptoms as if i had gone Hyperthyroid. I spoke to another g.p and he said that i should have been started on a much lower dosage so he reduced me down to 75mc a day of Thyroxine and i had another blood test which showed my TSH level as 0.32 and T3 normal and T4 24. I had been over medicated. I now have to go for another blood test on Nov 11th but im still having awful symptoms. This really is a horrible illness to have and i cant help but feeling iff i had been started on a lower dose and then slowly built up then perhaps it would have turned out better.

I was border line for under active thyroid when I was just 16 but I was never tested again untill lasy year when I was 26.I went to the doctors thinking I was having palpitations and I was freezing all the time even on hot summers days. I put my hair falling out down to just having a baby but 8 months on my hair was coming out even more. The weight issue is my biggest problem. Ive always been petite but now i just look like an umpa lumpa!!Now im on medication called thyroxine and hope to get back to normal. This site is very usefull as my doctor gave me no information. The receptionist just rand me to pick up prescrition as bloods were abnormal. Apparently I am very young to have this condition. Anyway thanks for such a helpful sight

I beg to differ about synthetic levothyroxine as my son was taken off his very good Armourthyroid by Forest and made ill by levothyroxine. He now has Horners Syndrome and at one point even woke up not long after going onto 250mcg with bleeding into the eye and short term memory shot at. He is seeing a Neurologist now-after Specsavers referred him to an Eye Specialist who immediately referrde him on-he awaits MRI scan shortly- this is potentially very serious-and i for one am looking at Medical Negligence. I have osteoporosis through not being diagnosed for over 20 yrs in NHS my son was diagnosed outside of NHS as he was classed as Borderline but had been seriously ill with life threatening infections-so either you are or you are not-no grey areas. Ref ranges are supposed to be only a guideline but docs are using them as the be all and end all-cos they no longer know how to diagnose from symptoms, the art has been lost to science. I have now sent for Fibromyalgia Intensive starter pack from www.supernutrient.net you have to order via email or phone as they aint got their act together for Internationals yet! Dr Brice E Vickery is a Holistic Chiropracter/Applied Kinesiologist who patented his products and has no Pharmaceutical interests like the doctors have. It is the best Scientific sense i have ever seen as it takes into account the body's inability to utilze Proteins along with the Sulphur metabolism. I know it makes sense as i have just begun a Clinical Nutrition course and listening to my first Audio CD before the online CD's-it goes through all the functions of the body. The Proteins are the building blocks to life so if you cannot use them your cells die off basically-i know now my late mother who died supposedly of Motor Neurone disease in her 40's seven years after menopause onset, she would have had this wrong with her.Unfortunately 40years too late to save her but i can with myself and that of my son.

I have had carpsal tunnel syndrom in the right wrist which was very severe (it involves pins and needles and numbness in the fingers and an excruitating paid in the arm) but I have been taking Glucosamine (a food supplement) and as long as I took Glucosamine every day I was pain-free, but low and behold, if I stopped for a few days, the pain was back with a vengance. However, since being diagnosed with underactive thyroid, I have learnt that one of the symptons is, you guessed it, carpsal tunnel syndrom. I thought I would leave off the Glucosamineas as I am now taking my thyroid pills and I wanted to see if it clear up and guess what, it has. So it wasn't RSI after all.

I have been diagnosed with hypothyroid and want to know if the drug I take for Rheumatoid Arthritis - which is Methotrexate could have had anything to do with causing this problem? I was on prednisilone for 13 years and pleased to say am now completely free of this drug - but now have osteoporosis as a result . One wonders if the drugs taken for one illness can often cause another - Anyone who has any comments on this - I would love to hear from them The site is a real eye opener and explained a lot of things that have been happening to me of late. Now I understand why I have been feeling so "under the weather"
