My daughter suffers from acne and she grew her hair long to try and disguise it. It turned out that because of the hair spray and gel she was using she was making her acne worse. She tied her hair back for a few weeks and her acne has improved a lot.

Some acne creams are good at getting rid of the spots, but leave the redness still there. I've found a product called Freederm which treats the redness as well as the acne - and it doesn't have that strong chemical smell a lot of the other creams have either. The gel costs £8.95 from chemists, such as Express Chemist.

hi i am 35 and have suffered from acne for years i to took dianette for years but my doctor took me off it. i have just discovered dettol soap, the bar not the liquid i use it morning and night and my skin has never been so clear. It is extremely cheap about 70p and very effective. I hope this information helps some of the people that suffer i wish i had known about it in my teenage years.

Does honey really help? I'm going to try that tonight. I am well past the age where I should be getting acne but the doctor has made me stop taking dianette and what has been clear skin for years has flared up again. I'm so depressed. Freederm doesnt help, nor does any creams ive tried. Someone recmmended this herbal thing called blue flag compound but no luck with that so far either. Im distraught.

I had great skin in my teenage years, but later developed severe middle aged acne in my 30,s. I was eventually given a drug called roaccutane by my skin specialist. This is a class a drug and can only be prescribed by a hospital. It also has side effects of extremely dry skin and cracked lips. I therefore stopped the drug early but still found the majority of the problem went away. I am now 47 and still get the occasional breakout, the doctor occasionally gives me flucloxacillin but is reluctant to do so because of increased risk of MRSA if I grow resistant to antibiotics through continued use of this drug. He has therefore prescribed me a skin gel called Duac which seems to be helping. I know the distress that severe acne causes particularly when you feel that you should be well past that stage. I had gotten to a depressed state about my condition and thought that there was no hope. There is and I trust this will help somebody out there in the internet ether and can reassure them that if they ask their doctor about all of the previously mentioned treatments they really do help.
