Coping with chronic fatigue (ME)
I've had ME for years and often have sore joints and muscles. I try to avoid taking too many prescription painkillers so Nurofen Muscular Pain Relief Gel's a good alternative. It costs £2.99.

I find that eating organic food really helps with my ME. I feel less tired and nauseous.

The article on this site about M.E. stated there's no cure for this illness, which doesn't give much hope to sufferers. It's true that there's no single cure which works for everyone, but there are ways of alleviating the symptoms of this condition. Anyone new to the illness should learn "pacing"; this is the recommended NHS treatment which helps most people. Where conventional treatment doesn't bring about improvement, there are alternative therapies available which can help. As an M.E. sufferer myself, I was somewhat sceptical of alternative therapies, especially because they're often dismissed by the medical profession. But there is a new therapy which may be worth trying. The Lightning Process is claiming high success rates for M.E. sufferers. It's very expensive, but I would recommend it because I've seen the proof that it' works. My daughter had M.E. for 11 years and was severely affected. After years of being hardly able to walk and housebound, she paid for a three day course of the Lightning Process. By the third day she had improved remarkably and is now back to her old self. She's now better, likewise every other person on the course was helped. I'm in recovery as well. Just wanted to say there is hope for everyone, even after a long time of being ill, but not necessarily with conventional methods.

I'm not sure if I have chronic fatigue. I am fine one day and then the next I wake up and feel dreadful. I ache and feel extremely tired. But then I wake up the following day and feel fine. Is this common?

Toni - sorry to hear about your mum. Fits are not a symptom of M.E., even in severely affected sufferers. This is something more serious, she needs a proper diagnosis from her doctor as soon as possible. If she's taking painkillers but they're not helping, she can get a slow release ibuprofen (Brufen Retard) on prescription from her GP, which works better for joint pains and muscle aches. The majority of people with M.E. do eventually recover, even if it takes many years. Only a very small minority of people will remain severely affected long term. Ask if there's an M.E. clinic or M.E. specialist in your area. These can offer better help for your mum.
