Coping with an underactive thyroid
I was recently diagnosed as having an underactive thyroid and put on a stone-and-a-half over six months. I went to the doctor about it and she said it wasn't unusual. She said the weight could be shed by following a balanced, calorie-controlled diet, as well as doing exercise once my energy levels begin to return.

I have had an underactive thyroid for 20 years now..since I was very young..and I'm definitely feeling the effects as I become older which I thought would get better since I have been on medication since I was a little kid. I'm on Thyroxine now at 88 mg..which I know is not enough but my doctors keep saying is enough. I feel tired most of the time and am always nervous and depressed during most of the day..and cannot lose weight even though I eat well and exercise regularly. I heard that taking b6 and b12 vitamins helps and reducing carb intake but I'm not sure if it's enough.

I have had borderline Hypothyroid for about 12 years it was only when I read that you can be symptomatic even when you are borderline and I took a list of the symptoms to the doctor and demanded that she do something that anything was done. It has bee 18mths now and it is still not under control I am currently taking just the T4 and I am hoping that a visit to the hospital will result in me have the T3 also. I have read that symptoms lessen dramatically when the combination of both is given....I am no a size 20 and certainly don't want to get any bigger....My advice to those whose doctors tell them that they are keeping an eye on it and are symptomatic to go back to your doctor and demand treatment.... Good luck everyone x

I have been suffering with an underactive thyroid for many years (it went undiagnosed for a very long time!). I thought I was losing my mind but kept going to my doctors until finally the doctor recognised some of my symptoms that her mother had been suffering and decided to test my thyroid which showed I had an underactive thyroid. I have been on thyroxine for approximately 8 years but still do not feel well! I am unable to shift the extra stone that I am carrying and the extreme headaches and tiredness just won't go away! I would like to find out if I should be eating certain foods to help but can't seem to find out any clear guidelines from anywhere! I find it encouraging that people out there are managing to feel better - I just wish that I could too.

I've just been told i have an under active thyroid. I put my weight gain down to quiting smoking and only found out when the doctor did a blood test because of the way my feet and ankles swell up and it's painful sometimes to walk. I hope the drugs kick in soon as i.m realy struggling to cope with the new stuff i'm having to learn at work. I realy need to lose this weight, i'm so uncomfortable.

Today I have just found out that I have an underactive thyroid. My Dr was not very informative and as you do I looked it up on the net. I do have all the classic signs, weight gain of a stone, irregular periods over the last year, feeling tired, lack of sex drive and for the past 18 months I've joined a gym and eat very very sensibly but yet have not lost any weight. Running 6km five times a week and my partner thought that something should be wrong if no weight is coming off. So now I have an answer (I think). I'm not on any medication, the Dr is monitoring me but I have high choresterol. Again I am told that this is related to my thyroid as I am already on low fat food.

I've been trying very hard to lose weight since I had an op for a nodule on my thyroid back in March. My thyroid became then became under active and I was put on Thyroxine (100mg). I've joined Slmming World and it's taken me 3 months to lose just 11lb but I hate to think how much weight I might have put on if I hadn't joined the club. I'm determind to get the weight off because I also suffer from high BP and

Sharon 14 years I have now had an underactive thyroid for 14 years caused by pregnancy and have struggled with my weight ever since despite being on 150mg of thyroxine. I put on approx 4 stone!! However I have now found the only diet that works for me which is the GL diet - it is fantastic, I have lost 18lbs and feel great so thought I'd share the information with you guys. Don't suffer for 13 years + like me try it, it's great. Well enough of sounding like a commercial, hope it works for you xx
