goodtoknow says: Obesity is on the increase in the UK with around one in five adults and 27 percent of children now obese. For adults, if your Body Mass Index (BMI) is between 25 and 29.9 you are overweight. If it's over 30 you're obese. Divide your weight, in kilograms, by the square of your height, in metres, to find out your BMI. The problem with being overweight is the health problems that go with it from heart disease to diabetes and high blood pressure. You need to change your lifestyle with a healthy diet and exercise to lose weight. Click onto our diet pages for more help.

If you are obese or overweight, you have an increased risk of developing various health problems. A realistic aim for many people is to lose 5-10% of your weight over three months. This is often about 5-10 kg. (10 kg is about one and a half stone.) This modest amount of weight loss will greatly reduce your increased health risks. The best chance of losing weight, and keeping the weight off, is to be committed to a change in lifestyle. This includes eating a healthy diet and doing some regular physical activity.
