'A light box changed my SAD'
Living with seasonal affective disorder
For years, I'd been low during the winter months. But when I found myself sobbing in a field while out walking the dog, I realised I needed help. That was about 12 years ago, and I went straight to see my doctor. He said I had the classic symptoms of seasonal affective disorder, or SAD. Everything slotted into place; the amount I'd been sleeping, my carbohydrate cravings and my low mood.
The doctor prescribed me antidepressants, but even then the change wasn't dramatic. The turning point came for me when another doctor suggested I tried light therapy, where you sit in front of a really bright light. I was sceptical, but I bought a long thin light box from a company called Lumie, that specialises in SAD products.
I put it above my computer and used it for about an hour a day. Within four days, I noticed my mood had lifted. Then I bought an even bigger light box, and it's honestly the best thing I've ever done. It lights up the whole kitchen when I'm cooking. With just 30 minutes of light therapy a day, I'm happier and less tired. My kids have certainly noticed I'm less snappy!
My husband, Malcolm, and I are hoping to buy a holiday home in Spain. Then we can have winter holidays in the sun, as that always helps with SAD. But if you can't do that, I'd definitely recommend trying a light box. It's changed my life!
