'Jabbing pain turned out to be shingles'
Living with shingles
The shingles virus is a clever little thing, as it always manages to come back to exactly the same place, again and again. I've even given it a name. I'll say, 'Oh Fred's back again'. I first had shingles about five years ago. It started with a nasty red rash on my left arm, and felt like someone was jabbing hundreds of needles into my skin.
My doctor diagnosed shingles, gave me painkillers and sent me away. Six weeks later, the rash reappeared. But this time it was at the top of my left thigh, and it was more like blisters. The pain was unbelievable, especially when I sat down.
When the doctor explained it was the shingles reoccurring, I was shocked. I was even more shocked when he said it was likely to keep returning.
Sure enough, I get an attack of shingles every couple of months that lasts about a fortnight. They tend to happen when I'm run down and my immune system is weak. It means I desperately try to avoid catching anything that's going round. My doctor prescribes me tablets that speed up attacks. You dissolve them in water and take them five times a day. The only other thing I can do to avoid a bout of shingles is to keep the area clean and dry, and not use any scented products.

I have previously had shingles which was a terrible experience. It was primarily on the right side and around my waist. I am now having all the same signs. Severe itching primarily in the same area and slightly itchy spots in several other places. I have severe back and right side pain. The itching has occurred for about 2 weeks and pain for about the last week. I feel terrible and have been to the doctor. I have not broken out yet with the blisters that I had the first time. The doctor is puzzled because everything points to shingles except for having not broken out with the sores. Can a person have shingles with out the sores? I do have some very small pin size spots but not anything like the first time. Meantime, I suffer, not knowing what it is?
