What to do if you suffer a sprain

Dr Roger Henderson, GP and author, on sprains
Average rating: 3 out of 5 star rating

'Remember the word RICE. This stands for Rest (do not exercise or run on this ankle for several days at least) and Ice it (apply a packet of frozen peas in a towel to the painful area several times a day for a few minutes at a time). Compress the area with an elastic support bandage, and Elevate the foot whenever you can (such as when watching TV). This simple regime, sometimes combined with taking a simple anti-inflammatory such as Ibuprofen, works very well for the vast majority of sprains. A few days should see you walking relatively well, with full recovery usually within a fortnight or so.'
