Mastitis affects more than just breastfeeding women

Mr Michael J Dixon, consultant surgeon, on mastitis

'Breast infection commonly affects women between the ages of 18 and 50 and can be split into two groups, that which occurs in women who are breastfeeding and that which occurs spontaneously. If you have problems getting your baby to breastfeed, see a midwife, breastfeeding counsellor or health visitor. But women not breastfeeding can still develop infection. Most women who get this are in their late 20s and early 30s, and about 90% smoke cigarettes.'
Mr Michael J Dixon, consultant surgeon, Western General Hospital, Edinburgh
