How to treat a fungal nail infection

Natalie Roberts, nail technician, on fungal infections
Average rating: 3 out of 5 star rating

'What people think is a fungal infection is normally bacteria on the natural nail. This infection looks like a green/black discoloration on the natural nail surface, and is caused by moisture trapped between the nail and the overlay of an artificial nail system. The bacteria thrive on warmth and moisture. You need to remove the overlay/extension and let air get to the natural nail surface. The discoloration will eventually fade and grow out. When having nail extensions or overlays, you must keep up with regular maintenance. Having infills every fortnight is the best way to reduce this risk. If any lifting occurs, see your nail technician. And remember to dry your hands thoroughly, preferably with a hair drier.'
