Why fibroids could affect your fertility

Mr Adrian Lower, consultant gynaecologist, on fibroids

'If your periods are heavy and painful, you may have fibroids, endometriosis or pelvic adhesions, all of which could affect your ability to conceive. If you are trying for a baby and do not conceive in a relatively short period of time, you should certainly get a general gynaecological check-up, including a pelvic scan to put your mind at rest. If you do have fibroids, there are a number of treatments that may be suitable for you.'
Mr Adrian Lower, consultant gynaecologist, Barts Hospital

Fibroids are benign tumors, (they are not cancerous), they are made up of muscle fibre and can be as small as a pea or as large as a melon. Estrogen seems to be an influencing factor, when women go through their menopause the fibroids usually shrink. Fibroids can effect any female usually after the age of 20 and seems to more prevelent in Afro-Carribean women than white women.
