Neil Hunt, chief executive of the Alzheimer's Society, on dementia and Alzheimer's

Average rating: 3 out of 5 star rating

'The Alzheimer's Society offers a pocket-sized help card for people to explain their diagnosis when they are out on their own. Carried inside a purse or wallet it includes contact details for a carer, friend or relative. This help card is about empowering people and supporting them to maintain their independence. For carers, it is a way of reassuring them they can let a partner go out and be by themselves for a while. This is something people with dementia have been asking for and will also help businesses to give people with dementia the best possible customer service.'

I have never thought of myself beingn"ill" but my memory has over the last couple of years has become ___ unreliable. I easily forget dates , names , appointments , and all the other things which were "normal" during the normal course of any day , so I keep a daily diary, make notes of things like appointments which are in a clip in the kitchen ---strangely enough I check these reglarily ---possibly because they in a prominent position hanging on a clip in the kitchen and I habitually check my diary before bed . Mind you I still forget but my wife acts as my "jogger" and before retiring reminds me to check my diary for any appointments for the following day. May her memory remain intact as I would cease to function without her.
