Dr Nigel Carter on cold sores

Dr Nigel Carter, head of the British Dental Health Foundation, on cold sores

'There are hundreds of bacteria and viruses in our mouths, and these can be passed on by sharing a toothbrush. It may be something relatively harmless such as the common cold or cold sore, but if the person sharing is infected with hepatitis B or HIV, these could also be passed on.'
Dr Nigel Carter, head of the British Dental Health Foundation

This comment is for Dr.Nigel Carter, may I first start by thanking you so much for your advice which I read in the Daily Express on April 15th 2008. The article was on toothpaste whiteners, as a dental nurse for more than 20 years I was browsing the article, when something of great interest caught my eye. My four year old son has been suffering for the past three years with recurring mouth ulcers, and seems to have geographic tongue. The three dentist's where I work had no idea what was the cause, and neither did the two oral surgeons who we have seen, and are due again to see in June 2008. On April 16th 2008 I stopped my son from using his toothpaste, at this point his ulcers were the worse they had ever been and had, had them for over seven weeks on the trot. By April 30th 2008 my sons ulcers had gone! What a relief it was for him at last. I am a bit annoyed with myself as I had been racking my brain for an answer, but now thinking back it all fits in to place, as the first time I noticed his sore mouth was when toothpaste was introduced to him. I can't wait to see the oral surgeons in June, who in all fairness have tried over the past couple of years to find a solution, even with the necessary blood test that where carried out. I still am unsure whether he has geographic tongue as I have only seen this a couple of times in older patients, but even that has improved. He is using sensodyne pro-enamel at present but I am looking for a toothpaste that is sls free but also contains fluoride. Once again thank you so much, it seems so obvious now that I can't believe that I or my colleagues did not think of toothpatse as being the cause. I feel that people should be aware of the effects that toothpaste can have. yours sincerely sarah brison (a very relieved mother!)
