What are the symptoms of ADHD?

In infants

  • Excessive crying, sometimes screaming and a refusal to be pacified or comforted.
  • Restless and sleeps very little.
  • Difficult to feed by breast or bottle, dribbles excessively and may be very thirsty (thirst is a sign of Essential Fatty Acid deficiency).
  • Head banging and cot-rocking are common
  • May not crawl but begin to walk and run around at a very early age. Some children sleep well but may have night terrors.

In older children

  • Clumsy and accident prone.
  • Erratic and disruptive behaviour. Fits and tantrums.
  • Compulsive touching of everything and everyone. Constant motion, wriggles legs. May walk on toes, and runs everywhere.
  • Disturbs other children and may be aggressive.
  • Unable to concentrate, never finishes anything he/she begins.
  • Demands must be met immediately. Frustration leads to temper tantrums.
  • Normal or high IQ but may do badly at school.
  • Poor hand and eye coordination. Uncooperative, defiant and disobedient.
  • Taking risks, playing dangerously without thinking about the consequences

Who's at risk?

About five to ten per cent of children and adolescents in the UK are affected by ADD/ADHD. Up to one in 100 of those are severely affected. Symptoms usually begin between the ages of three and seven, and the condition can run in families. Three times more boys get ADHD than girls.

There are 3 sorts of children with ADHD

Not everyone has the same symptoms.

1. Some sufferers are mainly hyperactive/ impulsive
2. Others are mainly inattentive/ can't concentrate
3. The majority of sufferers have both the above

I have experimented my daughter on almost all ADHD meds, nothing is working for her!!! I need help and fast. The teachers @ school is not coping with her, and wants me to remove her. She is behind in her school work. She jumps from calm to agressive to flopping down on the ground and feeling sorry for herself. She is so emosional, and then the next moment she will break something or hurt someone. And when they do the same to her, she goes histerical!!! PLEASE HELP ME!! I am a singel mom with limmeted funds, and I cannot afford expensive meds, even thou I have tried almost everything. I need help!!

For School help questions.... Are you a stay at home Mom?? If so why not home school? There is no better teacher in the world. If your child is behind he will excel, with the one on one and you will be able to give him/her more opportunity to get up and move. And nobody in the world will have more patience than you, because you love him so. I have seen many school teacher loose their tempers with the kids, and thing is most the time we have no idea, because we are not there to see it. Did you know the school gets more money per disability? I also agree with the diet these days... Good lord, I seen my nephew with adhd take out a volt from the refrigerator, and I was like (You can give him that!) Of course he has been drinking them all along up until then. And he did have a melt down. But diet is a biggie, along with vaccines........ Take care of you little ones, you didnt have them to give them aways for hours anyways!

i have three children 11, 6 and 3 and my middle son has just been diagnosed with adhd , i have been lucky i already new the signs and reconised it virtually straight away although i was one of those horrible people that before my son was born i felt there was no such thing as adhd and it was all down to parenting skills OH how was i wrong!!! my son is currently been statemented at school and he finds it difficult to cope especially at school.and is always on the go some advice i have found i big help is keep nagging you know your child and dont let people convince you it is nothing keep shouting till someone listenens, also my son is on omega three fish oils which i feel help him alot, and the massive difference we found that helped him was a simple thing we brought him a puppy and although this sound s crazy as parents that have a child adhd will understand why but it has so calmed him down and it is the best thing we could have done! i know this wouldnt work for everyone but it did help him.

I have just found this site on google. I have a five year old son who has been diagnosed with ADHD and also has alot of Autistic traits. His primary school is excellent but have advised me that from the age of 8 he would be better in a special school as the changing of class room each lesson would confuse and upset him to much. Does anyone have any advise on special schools and if it would be of a benifit to my son? it can be very isolating having a special child and does anyone have any advise on activities or clubs which would be benificially to my son?

I have a 5 year old son whom doesn't seem to be doing very well at school. The school has managed to get him 1 to 1 support 15 hours be week. He hasn't began to write but can form lines and circles. He only can do this for a very short time and becomes very disinterested. He is very active, so much so he regular bruses himself and I have attend the accident and emergency department for 3 head bands with a space of 4 months. When he is running he doesn't seem to know how to stop running when it is clear he is completely out of breath. He doesn't pay attention and appears to be in a trace. It is clear to me that he also has OCD has his complusion is to keep opening doors. He can do this for hours if I would allow him to. Please email back some advice on how bested to get help, advice and a diagnosis. Many thanks

I have a son that has been diagnosised by my GP and a child development doctor that my son may have ADHD. I am waiting for appointment for my son. From the children and young people specialist services East end Glasgow child and adolescents mental health this was also past as a referral fron the child development doctor. (they have said that there is a big waiting list and that I was more than welcome to place my sons name on the waiting list) what a joke. This was on 10/12/07 It is now the 11th of March 2008 and my son is is now taken a nose dive in his education I am at the point in my life that I am going to keep him off school unitil I get apointment from this department as i have been told that my son is 72 in the waiting list and that children that are self harming are a prority within this NHS service. So my son will have to wait. I am at my wits end. I am a single perent I also think my son is ADHD with Aurtistic traites. I am also quilified in child care. I am also doing this on my own without family support. I have contacted my MSP, Sosial workers, my sons school, My GP has procribed methlyphinadate with protest from the mental health team as it makes their job harder to diagnosis (well that tuff) I need my son to calm down or I am going to do some thing and these tablets do that for him and it is helping me and him to bond but I need an appointment now so the school can arrange a support worker in class with him to help him with his consntration, and for him to retain information and basic instructions

My son is now 25 years old but when he was a child I found out he was hyperactive (as it was called then). Not through diagnosis from a doctor but from a chance meeting while on holiday with parents of a hyperactive child. They talked about it and gave me a book called Hyperactivity. It listed over 100 symptoms and I realized my son had 75% of these, following their advice I went home and changed his diet. Cut out all colourings, no smarties, no sweets with colourings, biscuits with colourings in, cordials, fish fingers which in those days had tartrazine in them. Within 4 days he was a different child. I could not believe my eyes. His behaviour changed drastically. I am not saying it is the total cure but it certainly went a long way to make life easier. So I think the first place to start is diet. Fresh food rather than pre-packed. There are far more chemicals and pesticides in our foods now than there were then which I feel go a long way to causing this condition so I feel organic food and no pre packed, no artificial colourings etc could go a long way to helping. When he went to other childrens birthday parties I either enlisted the co-operation of the mothers dealing with the food, or took some special bit along for him. Good Luck ! I remember the frustrations well.
