Glue ear, a summary

Average rating: 4 out of 5 star rating

In summary

  • Glue ear is common in young children. It causes dulled hearing.
  • In most cases it goes away by itself within a few weeks or months.
  • Some children have two or more episodes of glue ear, but it is rarely a problem after the age of 7-8 years.
  • A balloon that is blown up by the nose may help some older children who are able to use it.
  • An operation to drain the fluid and insert grommets may be advised if glue ear persists or is severe.

Very interesting website , I have been dianogsed with Glue Ear today, and am waiting for appoinement to hospital. At 61 years of age, I am rather surprised at this out come, I have gone deaf in right ear only, I have tried antibiotics and other medication, but as you say, they do not work, I expect to have it drained and possibly grommets fitted, but do they use grommets on some one my age? I have to wait six weeks for hospital app. anyway, very nice web site, I have learnt alot from it, your explanations are excellent. keep up the good work. Pete.

Found this article very helpful but does 'glue ear' affect only children? I am aged 62 and have similar symptoms after a very heavy cold and cough; but also have very bad earache and a sticky watery discharge. Will it go away on its own or should I seek medical advice. Thank you Theresa Cain 03.01.08
