Hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid)

Hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid)
Average rating: 4 out of 5 star rating

goodtoknow says: An overactive thyroid, hyperthyroidism, is when the thyroid gland in your neck makes too much of the hormone thyroxine. It's your thyroid that keeps your metabolism ticking over. With an overactive thyroid your metabolism quickens up. You can feel jittery, sleep badly, be emotional, lose weight, have diarrhoea, be thirsty or have a swelling in your neck. It's often caused by Graves disease, an autoimmune disease that can cause bulging eyes, and affects more women than men. Drug or radio-iodine treatment can control your thyroid levels. An underactive thyroid, hypothyroidism, means you produce too little thyroxine so your metabolism slows down.

For a full medical explanation of the causes, symptoms and treatments of hyperthyroidism from patient.co.uk, read on.

Hyperthyroidism means a raised level of thyroid hormone. It can cause various symptoms. Treatment is usually effective.

Over Active Thyroid, 4 months

Patients with hyperthyroidism usually experience fatigue at the end of the day, but have trouble sleeping. Trembling of the hands and a hard or irregular heartbeat (called palpitations) may develop. These individuals may become irritable and easily upset. When hyperthyroidism is severe, patients can suffer shortness of breath, chest pain, and muscle weakness. Usually the symptoms of hyperthyroidism are so gradual in their onset that patients don't realize the symptoms until they become more severe. This means the symptoms may continue for weeks or months before patients fully realize that they are sick. In older people, some or all of the typical symptoms of hyperthyroidism may be absent, and the patient may just lose weight or become depressed. more information about hyperthyroidism, kindly visit www.overactivethyroid.info

I got diagonosed with Graves disease in Feb 08, doctor managed to get things under control by the end of May 08, and have been attending the hospital on a regular basis for blood tests etc. Everything had been going well until the end of March this year when my bloods started to get erratic again and I am now back to where I started. Feeling really anxious and emotional all the time, hardly getting any sleep at all and constantly shaking its horrible. Supposed to be getting either the operation or iodine treatment in the summer, but really worried it will then change to an underactive thyroid! So frustrating.

I was diagnosed with overactive thyroid sep 07. On medication, very low dose. Have history of heart problems so when I get fast heart rate Im not sure if its my thyroid or heart playing up. Can anyone tell me if they get a really strange muzzy head and very twitchy sensation at night time. I am having horrid nights and dont seem to be able to shake off this feeling. Can get to sleep but within mins it jolts me awake. Be great to hear from anyone who could shed some light on this, or offer any advice.
