It affects the knee most often, although the hip, shoulder and other joints can also become infected. It is caused by bacteria in the blood and symptoms include pain, redness and swelling in the affected joint. Treatment consists of antibiotics to kill the bacteria and draining of the infected fluid from the joint. Physiotherapy is then also recommended.
