Average rating: 3 out of 5 star rating

goodtoknow says: Somatization is where mental factors cause physical symptoms, and somatoform disorders are a severe form of this, such as body dysmorphic disorder. Many people will not admit their symptoms are mental. They can affect anyone at any time and it is difficult to say how common they are, as many cases are probably not diagnosed. The causes are also unknown, although genetic and environmental factors are thought to play a part. Treatment is difficult as many sufferers do not accept the symptoms are due to mental factors. Treating mental health problems, such as depression and anxiety often helps, as does cognitive behavioural therapy, providing the person admits that mental factors are the cause.
