Change the way you drink

Good news! New research suggests that tea is the best drink for your teeth.

Tea naturally contains fluoride which helps strengthen teeth enamel and a recent study says that chemicals in both black and green tea can destroy bacteria and viruses that cause throat infections, dental caries (a form of tooth decay) and other dental conditions.

However, if you love fizzy drinks and can't even think about giving them up, follow these tips:

  • Limit how often you drink them. Cutting back to one can a day is a good start. Then see if you can reduce that even further.
  • Don't slosh the drink around your mouth, because it will then cover the whole mouth in sugar, rather than the few teeth at the front of the mouth.
  • Use a straw to drink: this means that the sugary liquid is less likely to hit your teeth.
