Average rating: 4 out of 5 star rating

It may seem natural but bending over to lift something, from your shopping to your children, can do your back serious damage and is one of the most common causes of back injury.

The muscles in your back are not strong enough to support heavy objects as well as your own body weight.

What to do
Instead of bending from the hips and waist, you should bend your knees and lower yourself down to pick up heavy things. This means you'll be using the muscles in your legs, which are much larger, as well as your back muscles to take the weight.
