Snoring: Why it's bad for your health and how to stop it

6. Stay away from alcohol

A lot of non-snorers will find they suddenly start snoring after a night down the pub. This is because it causes your throat muscles to relax.

This also happens if you take sleeping pills or antihistamines just before going to sleep.

7. Try eating a spoonful of honey

A lot of people snore because their throat is dry. A spoonful of honey will make it moist without making it phlegmy, like milk does.

8. Stop smoking

There are loads of reasons why smoking is bad for your health and snoring is another one. Smoking causes your throat to swell which makes you snore. If you can't give it up completely then don't smoke right before you go to bed.

- We've got loads of tips and advice about giving up

9. Buy some nasal strips

If none of the home remedies work, you can buy some nasal strips which you can put on just before going to sleep. They open up your nostrils and allow more air in.

Anti-snoring pills and sprays can also help.

10. See your doctor

If you've tried everything and you're still losing sleep, or keeping your partner up all night, your doctor can help.

They might be able to refer you to a sleep centre for advice or there are private sleep clinics available - at a cost though!

chris, about 1 year

Dear Vicky, My loving wife of 30 years is an acute nose snorer. We know there is nothing medically wrong with her, she has tried every remedy. Just recently she was given an Adkins to stop her snoring when she went on holiday with her tennis friends and it worked. One of the holiday friends is a Doctor and he also gave her a special gel oral balance biotene, which helped cure her dry mouth. I do hope this will help other people too. We now sleep together after years apart in separate bedrooms. Best wishes Chris
