Hay fever - reduce your symptoms
The sneezing and runny nose caused by hay fever are part of many people's lives every year. Anti-histamine tablets can help, but there are other things you can do to avoid the pollen and spores in the air.
1. Avoid peak times
It may be difficult for some, but not going outside first thing in the morning or in the late afternoon means you will miss the peak pollen times. Between 7-10am and 4-7pm is when many grasses release their pollen.
2. Check the weather forecast
Knowing what the pollen count is going to be can help you in more than one way. Obviously, you will know to try and avoid going outside as much as possible, but it's also worth avoiding putting washing outside on these days, because it tends to collect on clothes and bedding on high-pollen days.
Many TV weather forecasts will tell you what the following day's pollen count will be - otherwise, you can check it at Pollen UK's website
3. Close the windows
This means in the house and in your car. At home, keep windows and doors shut, especially at peak times. Make sure you use the air-conditioning if you have it in your car, because it can help filter out the pollen.
