Cancer: How to stop a third of cases

Cancer: a third can be prevented

A third of all cancer cases diagnosed every year in the UK could be prevented, according to a cancer expert - enough to fill Wembley Stadium.

Why is it in the news?

Around 95,000 of people in the UK every year who are told they have cancer could have avoided the condition, according to Professor Martin Wiseman from the World Cancer Research Fund.

So how could they avoid cancer?

Professor Wiseman says a simple change in lifestyle, such as healthy eating, more exercise and not getting fat could prevent a third of all cancer cases in Britain.

What else does Professor Wiseman say?

'It can often be difficult to comprehend what numbers of cases mean. We hope that by comparing it to something that is easier to imagine, like the capacity of Wembley, we will be able to show the scale of the problem that we face.'

So what should we be doing to prevent cancer?

Professor Wiseman has the following recommendations to cut the risk of cancer:

  • Be physically active for at least 30 minutes a day
  • Avoid sugary drinks and processed foods high in sugar, salt and fat
  • Cut the amount of red and processed meat you eat
  • Eat more fruit, veg, wholegrains and pulses
  • Stop smoking
  • Limit your alcohol consumption to 2 drinks a day for men and 1 for women
