What is it?
It's a Japanese deep tissue massage that just uses the fingers and palm of the hand to apply pressure to certain points around the body to relieve pain and help heal.

How does it work?
Kneading the body with fingers allows the therapist to spot problems in the body and illness. It's believed that shiatsu massage stimulates the immune system, nervous system and circulation.

What conditions can it treat?
Often people find it very helpful for joint pain, sporting injuries and sickness after medical treatment involving strong drugs and chemotherapy.

Can I have it on the NHS?
Occasionally a doctor may recommend shiatsu massage to help stiff joints or muscle pain or for the after effects of chemotherapy.

How much does it cost?
A session can cost anything between £30-£60 but this varies across the country.

Where can I go to get treatment and find out more information?
Speak to your doctor about it as they may be able to refer you to an occupational therapist first, who can then help to you to find a shiatsu practicioner or some other form of theraputic massage. Or visit Shiatsu Society UK or British School of Shiatsu-Do
