What are the symptoms of gastroenteritis?
- The main symptom is diarrhoea, often with vomiting as well.
- Crampy pains in the abdomen (tummy) are common. Pains may ease for a while each time some diarrhoea is passed.
- High temperatures (fever) and headaches are common.
If vomiting occurs, it typically lasts only a day or so. Diarrhoea often lasts for several days or more and often continues after the vomiting stops. Loose stools (loose faeces) can persist for a week or so before a normal pattern returns. Sometimes the symptoms last longer.

Sarah, about 1 year
I am just getting over a tummy bug which started 5 days ago. It started with tummy cramps, nausia & eventually diarroea. The tummy cramps continued each day followed by a bout of diarroea. Also continued to feel sick, but never was actually sick. Felt tired, but irritable along with it, however, I did find that sleep helped a great deal. Still managed to eat, as thankfully did not seem to lose my appitite. But although it eased my hunger, it then made me feel sick & eventually feel the need to go to the toilet. Today, I have returned to bed after taking my children to school this morning, and got up 2 hrs later, and felt really well, with no nausia or diaroea (i even managed to bottom-burp without following through)!!! Embarrasing I know, but feel people should know that it does happen!!! I've kept all toilets clean, and used bacterial lotion on my hands at all times, and nobody in my family seems to be suffering. So I hope, that I have kept it from them. Until the next virus comes along. . . . . . . . . god help us!!!!
