What causes semisomnia?
There are a three main reasons identified by Neil Stanley why generally our sleep patterns and quality of sleep is so poor.
Always-on
Our 21st-century lifestyle means that things never stop. We can shop 24 hours a day, watch TV 24/7, always go online and find information... the list goes on.
We have information overload and many people hate switching off, be that literally turning off their TV or computer, or turning their mind off. The question is, when do we sleep?
Blackberry-bushed
We don't all have high-powered jobs, but more and more people are working from home and are contactable all the time.
Many people now see work and home life blurring and can't turn parts of their life off.
- 9 million people use a Blackberry to check emails
- 3 in 10 full-time employees have send time working from during the last month
- 7 out of 10 working adults think technology has blurred their work and personal life
Bedtime buzz
- 66% of people are regularly kept awake anxious about money, work of family issues
- 69% of people who get a bad night's sleep put it down to stress, worry and not being able to switch off
The thing that is most important that many people don't do properly is wind down before going to bed. Dr Stanley maintains that focussing on this will help improve the quality of most sufferers sleep.
