Stop and think

If you start getting a headache, don't reach for the tablets straightaway.

Stop what you're doing and think if there's anything you can do to help yourself.

  • If you've spent too long concentrating on a computer screen, book or something else, you may just need to relax for 15 minutes. Tension makes pain feel worse, so controlling your breathing and relaxing can help to release that tension and often ease your pain.
  • A massage or a hot flannel to the neck or forehead can often make the ache go away
  • Many headaches can also be treated simply by drinking water - dehydration is a common cause of headache and some say as many as 1 in 10 headaches are a result of not drinking enough.
