Ask Dr Chris: Spots, bad breath

Ask Dr Chris: Spots and bad breath
Average rating: 3 out of 5 star rating

Every week we partner up with our sister magazine, Woman, to bring you expert health advice from This Morning's Dr Chris Steele MBE, health journalist of the year. This week he answers your questions on Spots and bad breath

The problem

I'm 34 and I've got spots. My doctor said going on the Pill might clear up my skin, but it hasn't. What can I do?

Dr Chris' advice

Teenage spots tend to lessen by the early 20s as the hormonal surges of adolescence settle down. Some women over 25 with acne may be suffering from polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS).

However, if PCOS is the problem, cysts in your ovaries disturb the sex hormone balance and produce acne, excess hair (especially facial), obesity, infrequent or missed periods and difficulty conceiving. You need to be investigated - have another chat with your GP.

The problem

My husband's developed bad breath. He's really self-conscious about it. Can I suggest anything without offending him?

Dr Chris' advice

Bad breath, or halitosis, is usually caused by bacteria attacking tiny food particles. Ask him to try Retardex oral rinse and toothpaste, plus frequent flossing. If that doesn't work, he may have a dental or gum infection.

You can email Dr Chris Steele at goodtoknow or womanhealth@ipcmedia.com, marking the subject 'Dr Chris'. Sorry, but Dr Chris can't reply to letters personally. For further advice, go to Dr Chris' website at www.thefamilygp.com

Bill Warner, about 1 year

I found that by using a Gripit Floss Holder, I began flossing regularly because I no longer had to put my fingers into my mouth. This habit went a long way toward reducing bad breath.
