Ask Dr Chris: Migraines, bad eyesight
Every week we partner up with our sister magazine, Woman, to bring you expert health advice from This Morning's Dr Chris Steele MBE, health journalist of the year. This week he answers your questions on migraines and bad eyesight.
The problem
I'm 37, with two children, and suffer terribly from migraines. Nothing my GP has given me has helped, What's your advice?
Dr Chris' advice
Go back to your GP and ask about a newer migraine treatment, or 'triptans'. They're effective, work very quickly and can be taken as a nasal spray, melting tablet or self-inject syringe. If you've already tried these, ask to be referred to your local migraine specialist.
The problem
I've been advised my six-year-old son needs glasses. I'm worried his sight will only get worse if he depends on them so young - what do you think?
Dr Chris' advice
Short-sightedness or myopia, means you can't see distant objects clearly, It normally starts at puberty, and the earlier it develops the more severe it can get, but it usually stabilises in adult years. Your son must wear the glasses your optician prescribes, and as he gets older he may be advised to try contact lenses. He won't become dependent on them - he just needs them to help his vision.
