Ask Dr Chris: Deep Vein Thrombosis and lack of energy

Ask Dr Chris Steele: Deep Vein Thrombosis, tiredness | Expert advice | Ask the doctor
Average rating: 3 out of 5 star rating

Every week we partner up with our sister magazine, Woman, to bring you expert health advice from This Morning's Dr Chris Steele MBE, health journalist of the year. This week he answers your questions about DVT and constant tiredness.

The problem: Long haul worries

I'm planning to see my mum in Australia, but I'm worried about the connection between longhaul flights and deep-vein thrombosis (DVT). How can I reduce the risks?

The answer

If you need to, lose weight and stop smoking. During the flight, drink half a pint of water every hour and restrict alcohol intake to three glasses of wine max. Do the following exercises, frequently, while sitting: hold your heels up and count to three, then do the same with your toes, and repeat. This pumps the blood up through your leg veins, reducing the risk of DVT.

The problem: I'm always so tired

I'm constantly exhausted. My GP has eliminated anaemia and other possible serious causes. Is there a supplement I could take to give me a lift?

The answer

Yes, recent studies have shown that Co-enzyme Q10, a naturally occurring vitamin-like substance, can help with fatigue, so why not try it for a month? I'd recommend Bio-Quinone Q10 (Q10.co.uk, 0800 591756).
