Ask Dr Chris: Looking tired and piles
Every week we partner up with our sister magazine, Woman, to bring you expert health advice from This Morning's Dr Chris Steele MBE, health journalist of the year. This week he answers your questions about dark circles under the eyes and piles.
The problem: 'I always look tired'
I can't get rid of the dark circles under my eyes. Is there a diet I can follow or vitamins that would help?
The solution
Did one of your parents have dark circles? You can inherit them. Also, brown-eyed people are more susceptible. Otherwise, fatigue or ill health could be factors.
Improve your lifestyle with more exercise and a healthy diet with lots of fruit and veg, reduce your alcohol intake, and try to get eight hours' sleep every night.
The problem: Piling on the agony
I keep getting piles. I've heard they're usually associated with pregnancy, but I've had no children. What can I do, and can they be dangerous?
The solution
Piles, or haemorrhoids, are common. They're swollen veins around the anus and can be internal or external. Pregnancy, constipation and being overweight are all causes.
Piles are not dangerous, but symptoms include bleeding, discomfort, discharge and itching. Stick to a high-fibre diet, and try one of the many products from your pharmacy. If there's no improvement, talk to your GP.
