Ask Dr Chris: Alcohol in pregnancy, oily fish
Every week we partner up with our sister magazine, Woman, to bring you expert health advice from This Morning's Dr Chris Steele MBE, health journalist of the year. This week he answers your questions about food poisoning and feeling numb.
The problem: 'Has alcohol hurt my baby?'
I've just discovered that I'm about six weeks pregnant. I've had a few boozy nights out lately and now I'm worried that I've hurt my baby.
The solution
Many women have suffered the same worries. It really depends on what you mean by ‘six weeks'. If you mean six weeks since your last period then you're only four weeks pregnant, as you probably conceived two weeks after your last period, ie when you last ovulated. So don't worry too much about it, but from now on play safe and don't drink any alcohol.
The problem: 'Too much fish?'
I eat quite a lot of oily fish. Is there a healthy quota I should be eating each week, as I've read that too much can be bad for you?
The solution
Try to eat oily fish such as herring, mackerel, sardines and salmon three times a week as it's a great source of omega 3. If you eat more, don't worry. However, if you're pregnant, avoid fish like shark, marlin and swordfish as they may contain mercury.
