Ask Chat's Doc: Sleep problems, the menopause and acne
Every week we partner with our sister magazine, Chat to bring you expert health advice from Dr Martin Edwards. This week he covers sleep problems, the menopause and acne.
Is too much sleep bad for you?
Question
I've always enjoyed a good eight hours every night, but my friend says too much sleep can lead to Alzheimer's disease. Now I'm worried!
Pamela, 62
Answer
Your friend has the wrong end of the stick. People with Alzheimer's often don't sleep well at night, making them drowsy by day, so they keep dozing off. But just because people with Alzheimer's can be sleepy, doesn't mean there's any danger in a good night's sleep. Keep enjoying your eight hours!
Have I started the menopause?
Question
Whenever I visit the loo at night, I have hot sweats as soon as I return to bed! Surely it's too late for menopause symptoms at my age?
Pat, 76
Answer
I'm afraid it's never too late - a few unfortunate women suffer menopausal flushes and sweats for years, even decades, though no one's sure why. But if these sweats are a recent development then check with your doctor to rule out other causes, such as an infection or blood disorder.
How can I get rid of my spots?
Question
I have terrible acne and I've tried everything from the supermarket, but nothing works! Help!
Paula, 21
Answer
Don't give up on those supermarket remedies, they can help. Try an antibacterial skin cleanser, and a cream such as benzoyl peroxide to unblock your pores. Your GP can also offer special forms of the contraceptive Pill, or antibiotic tablets or lotions. And sunshine helps too, so there's a perfect excuse for a summer break!
